How to Choose a Real Estate Agent: Questions to Ask

Your agent guides you through one of the largest transactions of your life, so it is worth interviewing more than one. These questions get you the answers that matter.

Experience and focus

  • How long have you been working in real estate, and in this area?
  • Do you work with the type of property I am buying or selling, such as single-family, condo or multi-family?
  • Are you licensed in the state where the property is?

Communication

  • How and how quickly will you respond?
  • Who will I work with day to day?
  • Can we communicate in the language I am most comfortable with?

Strategy

Ask how they would price your home or structure an offer, and how they would handle competing offers. Look for clear reasoning, not just confidence.

Track record and reviews

Read what past clients say on review sites and ask for references. Consistent comments about responsiveness, honesty and communication are a good sign.

How the agent is paid

Ask how the agent is compensated and what services are included. Buyers are now often asked to sign a written agreement before touring homes, so read it and ask questions before you sign.
