What Credit Score Do You Need to Buy a House?
Your credit score affects whether you're approved and the interest rate you get. Here are the general ranges lenders work with.
Typical minimums
- FHA loans: about 580 for the 3.5% minimum down payment. Some lenders go lower with a larger down payment.
- Conventional loans: usually around 620.
- Lenders can set their own, higher minimums, and higher scores generally get better rates.
Ways to raise your score
- Pay every bill on time. Payment history matters most.
- Keep credit card balances low, ideally under 30% of the limit.
- Don't open or close several accounts right before applying.
- Check your free credit reports and dispute any errors.
Even a few months of good habits can move your score. A lender can tell you exactly where you stand and what would help most, and we're happy to introduce you to one. This article is general information, not financial advice.
